As 2020 comes to an end, we realize that more and more of us are spending extended periods of time at home. More time at home means not just extra time with the family but getting to know your house better. Through this process a lot of homeowners have discovered they have or are starting to outgrow their home, especially those with the new challenge of working from home. How Arts & Crafts Can Help A Community

Right now a lot of businesses are closed down and we find ourselves at home more with some extra time on our hands. Deciding what you're going to do with that time is the million dollar question. Some will use the time to fix things around the house, some will practice self-maintenance, and others will use their skills to give back to the community. Our own Monika Frost and her family decided to do just that! Normally spending her day as an office manager for Dexter Builders, Monika now commits a larger portion of her day to assisting in their family's business called Forever Blankets by Nikki. Usually known for her custom blankets Nikki decided to swing the small business over to making masks. Switching from custom blankets to custom masks can be a great way to introduce this new trend to everyone that might not be too keen on wearing this new accessory.

We are a group of Hockey Playing Men and Women who want to share our love of the sport and give back to our community and we couldn't do it without your help. Thank You for helping us give back to the community we love. Each year the proceeds are given to the Ann Arbor rockets and another local group that could us some extra help in strengthening our community. 2020 Dexter Ice Fest

Dexter Daze, Apple Daze, Paint Dexter, Holiday Hustle, and the list goes on; But now we have another great event to add at the end of January! We know Winter doesn't exactly bring joy to everyone with the cold and the snow. That's why you need a festival during these sometimes dreary months.

We aren't quite sure if we will have a magical winter wonderland that is pictured above, but we do know it will be cold enough for the ice sculptures and live demo. Sun or snow we have plenty of gun for the whole family including Snack Shack featuring a hot cocoa station an s'mores kits to roast over a bonfire, Special appearance by Elsa from Frozen, Face painting and crafts for the kids, and Yard games/snowman building contests to keep the fun going between ice carving demos.

The Highlight of the Dexter Ice Fest is well...ICE! If you have had the pleasure of attending Plymouth Michigan's winter festival then you have seen some of the amazing sculptures they have on display. We were lucky enough to get the same amazing company to do 33 different ice sculptures and 3 different live ice carving demonstrations!!! take a look at the video above to see their amazing work in action!

Trex Rainescape makes your deck double as a covered porch

This project has been quite the transformation. It went from small deck and a pool (that had to be removed and filled in) to this large and soon to be party deck and stamped concrete patio. That's right, there is also going to be a lower level for entertaining.

Checkout the video at the end for more information about the deck drainage system you never knew you needed!

It might not now look like much now but this deck has a pretty cool feature that not a lot of people know about

If you look closely you will see what looks like the beginning of a gutter system built into the deck...Because it is!

Trex RainEscape is an under-deck drainage system that uses a network of troughs and gutters to keep rain, spills and snowmelt from dripping through elevated deck boards creating a dry space below the deck. Once the Trex RainEscape deck drainage system is installed, homeowners can design an outdoor living space that includes lights, ceiling fans, an entertainment center, an outdoor kitchen and more.

This pictures does a great job of showing how the Trex Rainescape system works beneath the soon to be installed deckboards. What would normally be dripping down underneath your deck. Water, dirt, and debris will be corralled and then swept away by the Trex Rainescape system as it falls below your deck boards

Decks will introduce you to a world of outdoor lounging and increased home value

This beautiful deck was finished just in time for summer after demoing an existing deck. Why upgrade a deck? Well besides the curb appeal and adding a larger outdoor living area...did we mention the resale value?!? On average decks let the home owner recoup over 70% of the decks original value.

When building a deck there are many things to consider including material options. The deck boards seen here are Azek Composite Deck Boards. There are a lot of options out there so do some research and make sure you are choosing a deck that fits your budget as well as your home. in some instances a nice pressure washed and treated wood deck is going to give you the most bang for you buck. However, if you have a larger and ore expensive home then a normal wood deck just might not do the trick. The deck is an extension of your home and should at least match the quality.

Another thing to consider would be design and how you will access your deck. This particular deck looks over a beautiful open back yard and the homeowners didn't want the deck to intrude. Our solution was to add a small landing to the deck to keep it closer to the patio below and offer a second point of access to the deck.

Another thing to consider when thinking of adding or remodeling a deck is...Why? Do you want to grill, do you want to entertain, is this going to be another family area? For many people it's all of these reasons and you are going to need a deck that matches your needs. Easiest solution is to make sure your deck is big enough for things to be changed around to fit any scenario.

Ok, we're at the last picture and if you still aren't convinced then just checkout this link from The Daily Herald that claims that decks are one of the highest returns when reclaiming value of a project. They go a little more in-depth talking about different factors that can affect costs, but there is one things that can't really be depreciated and that's the joy factor. If you love the outdoors and cherish the few warms months we have then I suggest you look into living those months with more lunches in the sun and cocktails at sunset.

Last weekend our company was part of fundraiser that combined two great causes and the sport of hockey. The local hockey community came together to support the Ann Arbor Rockets and The Miles Roberts Memorial Fund.

The Arctic Coliseum in Chelsea, MI played host to a trio of charity hockey games featuring the Masters 40 and over hockey league, Platinum 50 and over hockey league, Ann Arbor Rockets, and the MACRHL women's hockey league. Game one had Dexter Builders Vs Dexter Block of the Platinum 50 and over hockey league. After 3 periods Dexter Block had just enough to edge Dexter Builders in the hard fought but fun Charity game.

Every year we like to have a little get together to celebrate with friends and our Dexter Builders Family. We talk about the great year we had and what exciting events the new year might bring. This year it only seems fitting that we switched venues to a remodeled barn that is part of Misty Farm . You may have passed it while driving down Scio Church Rd and thought wow that place looks amazing! I'm here to tell you that the exterior doesn't do justice to the interior or the friendly staff that helped us with our holiday party. As Always the cherry on top of this holiday sundae was the food. Our feast was catered by Dexter Riverview Café and I think I'm still full. Next time you're in Dexter between 7am-3pm you would be mistaken if you didn't stop in for a delicious breakfast or lunch...make sure you get some rice pudding!

The Magic of Christmas Foundation was founded by Debbie Williams-Hoak and teams up with the Ann Arbor Police Department to make sure kids from around Washtenaw Country have a merry Christmas and have a positive perception of police officers in their community. HIDDEN MESSAGE REVEALED IN ANN ARBOR KITCHEN REMODEL

Earlier today one of our projects was in the early demolition stage of a kitchen remodel. Yesterday we found a new home for the existing granite, the existing hardwood flooring had been removed, and all that was left was to take out the old cabinets. That's when something caught the eye of Mark, one of our finish carpenters.

He noticed that secret messages had been left by the previous home owners throughout the years. It was hard to tell if it was just one family or a collection of messages each time the house had been remodeled.

It's interesting things like this that make a job as a Skilled Tradesman fun and exciting. You never know what each day will bring or what challenges may lie ahead. This Saturday April 22 is Earth Day and we decided to get a head start this year. We planted three new tree at our office showroom. We decided on two Sugar Maple Trees and one New Bradford Pear Tree to make sure the outside of our beautiful piece of the earth matches the inside. So this weekend take a second and plant a bush or tee, roll around in the soft green grass, or just get outside and enjoy this amazing ball we call home.

Most of our clients begin their kitchen remodel with cabinets. There is almost an unlimited number of choices that can meet any aesthetic and budget need. You may have already encountered industry nomenclature that describes cabinet options as stock, semi-custom and custom. Did you know that those terms refer to the different production methods employed to manufacture cabinets; the terminology has nothing to do with the quality of the cabinet.

Stock

Stock cabinets are ready-made, pre-manufactured and ship when an order is received. They can't be altered or customized. What you see is what you get.

Pros: Price, and you don't have to wait for long lead times to have your cabinets delivered.
Cons: Typically you don't have a broad selection of styles, shapes, colors, wood type or finishes.

Semi-Custom

Semi-custom cabinets come in basic sizes similar to stock cabinets but give designers the flexibility to resize cabinet drawers and doors and modify the depth of the cabinets themselves.

Pros: The best of both worlds. A gentle price tag accompanied by some ability to have your cabinets your way to meet space requirements and design preferences.
Cons: May not provide all of the flexibility you need to meet room requirements or aesthetics preferences.

Custom

As the name suggest, custom cabinets provide a blank canvas to get whatever size, color and finish that you desire. Most custom cabinets are built to order on a case by case basis.

Pros: Clients can get the details and features that they want to make personal design statements in their home and outfit their new kitchen to exacting requirements.
Cons: Custom cabinets are labor intensive because they are built one at a time and can take a few weeks or even a couple of months to build. They also generally cost more than semi-custom and stock cabinets.

Last Friday was the 11th annual SafeHouse Golf Outing at Lake Forest Golf Club and it was a blast. It Began with registration and breakfast just before the shotgun start a little after 9am. The course was at capacity with a strong showing from Thomson Reuters Employees participating and volunteering! The Fun continued at the turn with a gourmet hotdog lunch and beer tasting from Sam Adams. As Always this great event was finished off with raffle prizes, 50/50, a live auction and an amazing dinner from Outback Steakhouse. GUIDANCE FOR SELECTING COUNTERTOPS

Countertops play two critical roles in the kitchen. The first is functional. We understand that countertops are used for preparing meals, baking and as spaces for storing kitchen equipment and utensils. Equally important is the aesthetic role that countertops play.

When working with a designer or selecting a countertop on your own, here are several key factors to consider to help assure that the product you choose makes you smile every time you walk into and use your kitchen.

Take a holistic view of the kitchen. Countertops, cabinets, appliances, faucets, sinks and hardware need to be in tune with one another. No one component of the kitchen should stand alone. The components need to connect with one another.

How countertops make a kitchen look and feel is determined by the material, texture, color, style, form and shape. The way that countertops contrast or compliment other elements has an impact too. We always ask clients, "What message do you want your countertops to convey, and what emotions do you want the space to evoke?"

Material will impact how easy the surface is to clean and maintain. The most popular materials that we specify for clients are:

Granite: It's versatile, tough and offers an almost infinite palate of colors and styles. Granite is easy to maintain and it will last a lifetime. o Engineered Stone: Products such as Zodiaq and Silestone function and perform in a similar fashion to granite. They are heat and scratch resistant and easy to maintain. The materials will last a lifetime, don't stain and offer an almost unlimited spectrum of colors, textures and styles.
Stainless Steel: Professional chefs gravitate to stainless steel, in part, because it is impervious to bacteria and heat. Stainless steel requires more maintenance because of its propensity to scratch and show water spots and fingerprints. We often specify stainless steel countertops for clients that want commercial-styled appliances and plumbing fixtures. o Butcher Block: This is a surface that represents good value if you like the aesthetic. It's versatile and can work in both traditional and contemporary kitchens. Butcher block can scratch and regularly needs to be treated. Also, it is not impervious to heat.
Soapstone: This material also has a broad range of stylistic options from contemporary to traditional like butcher block it also requires regular oil applications. Soapstone also is resistant to stains, but it can be more difficult and costly to maintain because fixing cracks can be expensive.
Solid Surface: Materials such as Corian, Formica and Staron are examples of solid surface countertops. They offer great ranges for colors and finishes and require minimal maintenance.
Concrete: There are no limitations on concrete countertops. You can create custom textures, colors, shapes and surfaces. They are environmentally friendly and heat resistant. They typically require more maintenance because they need to be sealed to protect the surface from stains, water and heat damage. The cost ranges from moderate to luxury depending on the amount of customization.
